Bothamley park learning story

Bothamley Park Learning story

Problem:
How can we look after and support our local park?
How can I use my ‘voice’ to make a difference?

My Learning:
I noticed that the stream was polluted with rubbish like plastics and packets
(also an old motorbike, glass) so we could pick up all the rubbish to make the stream clean.

I found out that there are heaps of different invertebrates like banded kokopu and dragonflies

I feel sad because people just leave their rubbish lying around then it all goes in the stream.

Now I will try to convince people to put their rubbish in the bin by making signs saying please
put your rubbish in the bin or please pick up rubbish you see.

The problem:
How do I communicate what Bothamley Park is like using the style of Henri Matisse?

What we did:
We cut out shapes to represent what we saw at Bothamley park and we did a draft before we did the real one.  This is the draft.

Here is a photo of my art:

Success Criteria:  To represent the environment I saw at Bothamley Park, I will use-
  • Cut out shapes
  • Repeated shapes and patterns
  • A range of geometric shapes.
  • Bright and bold colors.

(highlight the success criteria you achieved)

My Learning:  (Choose 2 to write about)

  • I was good at cutting out repeated shapes.

  • I used the key competency of managing self as learning power because we could get our work done faster.

The Problem:
How do I retell a significant event so others can share my experience?

My recount:  (copy and paste your recount here)
Monday 29th January
In the (2017) Christmas holidays my whole family except my uncle Siva went
to Whitireia park. (Whitireia park is near Titahi Bay beach). Me my uncle Justus
my dad Tom and my brother Lockie saw a dead seal.
It was lying on the rocks and it looked like someone had killed it because its tail
was almost off it. I felt really sad that the seal was dead. my uncle was in Auckland
that's why he did not come.
Whitireia park is near Titahi Bay. My uncle didn’t come because he said he
didn’t want to come. Before we had lunch I went kayaking.  It was funny because
I kept on tipping out. Then I got the hang of it. You just have to lean forward and
don’t lean sideways. I felt proud of myself when I got the hang of it.
(we got there by car).

Success criteria: (highlight the success criteria your writing shows)
I can use-
  • A powerful hook to get the reader’s attention
  • Where, when and who in the introduction to set the scene
  • An introduction- middle- conclusion
  • The 5 W’s (where, when, why, who, what,) and 1 H (how) to add detail
  • Dialogue to tell what happened
  • The past tense
  • Descriptive words to make the writing interesting
  • Precise words to let the reader know what exactly happened.
  • Connectives to make the story flow from one group of ideas to another.
  • Punctuation to help the reader understand the ideas
  • A personal voice like I think….

My Learning:  (Choose 2 to write about)

  • I was good at revising because before when I did not revise it did not make
  • sense and some words weren't spelled properly.

  • I got better at adding punctuation because I never put full stops and capital
  • letters then when I checked it again I saw there were no full stops
  • and capital letters then I added full stops and capital letters.

  • I used the key competency of  managing self as learning power because I
  • didn’t get distracted and I managed myself.

  • I needed to use the key competency of teamwork as learning power because
  • we could get our work done faster.

  • Jonathan thinks I am good at using descriptive words because it’s describing
  • what you did.

Maths learning story

Brooklyn’s Maths learning Story
The Maths problem:
We were trying to make a rectangle garden with a 36m perimeter when we looked at the
Te Rito garden problem.   Lepale drew shape A. Jeremiah drew shape B and said it had a
bigger area because it looked slightly bigger. Lepale wasn’t so sure.
Who is right and how can you prove it?
Tangaroa thought that this shape would make an interesting garden.  What is the perimeter
of this garden? What is the area?

The story of the Maths problem: (use your own words)
Lepale and Jeremiah drew rectangular garden each with a 36 perimeter to see
which had the bigger area.

Lepale drew A. Jeremiah drew B. Shape A was 8m x 10m. Shape B was 11x7.

What we were trying to find out:
Who’s rectangle shape has the biggest area and prove it.

How we solved the problem:
Here is how solved the problem.

First we drew shape A 8m x 10m = 80m2.

The area is the space inside the shape in square meters.

Then we drew shape B 7m x 11m = 77m2.

Next, we checked the answers.

A is bigger because 80 is bigger than 77. So A has the bigger area.

Working as a group is important:  Choose 2 to write about
I am good at sharing ideas because I want my group to know what I’m thinking.
I am getting better at asking questions because I never used to ask questions now
I am starting to ask questions.  Asking questions is important because you know what
the group is doing and so you understand.

Reading Learning story

Brooklyn’s Term 1 Reading Learning Story
How do we make meaning from the texts we read using a range of reading strategies?

I chose this Library book to read at silent,
sustained reading time because I want to learn
about farms and farming.

Image result for Ben and mark boys of the high country
I located information in the story that told me Ben takes Midgee the pony for a swim
and Midgee the pony looks upset but she really likes cooling off in the lake.

I located this information by skimming and scanning.
I worked out that the lake might be a bit cold.  I used the clues, “Midgee looks a bit upset…”
I found out that an important idea in the story is that Ben & Mark use sticks from a
young manuka tree and the bark is rubbed off by a blade of a hunting knife then the
sticks become smooth and dark. The sticks are used for walking on scree slopes and for stability.

It is important because the sticks are helping Ben & Mark so they don’t fall.
I used what I know about farming- that there are mountain farms and farms out in the country
and ideas from the story where Ben and Mark’s Dad is the manager of Mount White Station to
work out that Mount White Station is a big farm.
I enjoyed this book because it had heaps of information about Ben and Mark and about farms too.
Here is a screencastify of me reading some of my book  (You don’t have to show your face
if you don’t want to)
