Maths learning story

Brooklyn’s Maths learning Story
The Maths problem:
We were trying to make a rectangle garden with a 36m perimeter when we looked at the
Te Rito garden problem.   Lepale drew shape A. Jeremiah drew shape B and said it had a
bigger area because it looked slightly bigger. Lepale wasn’t so sure.
Who is right and how can you prove it?
Tangaroa thought that this shape would make an interesting garden.  What is the perimeter
of this garden? What is the area?

The story of the Maths problem: (use your own words)
Lepale and Jeremiah drew rectangular garden each with a 36 perimeter to see
which had the bigger area.

Lepale drew A. Jeremiah drew B. Shape A was 8m x 10m. Shape B was 11x7.

What we were trying to find out:
Who’s rectangle shape has the biggest area and prove it.

How we solved the problem:
Here is how solved the problem.

First we drew shape A 8m x 10m = 80m2.

The area is the space inside the shape in square meters.

Then we drew shape B 7m x 11m = 77m2.

Next, we checked the answers.

A is bigger because 80 is bigger than 77. So A has the bigger area.

Working as a group is important:  Choose 2 to write about
I am good at sharing ideas because I want my group to know what I’m thinking.
I am getting better at asking questions because I never used to ask questions now
I am starting to ask questions.  Asking questions is important because you know what
the group is doing and so you understand.

  1. Brooklyn, you have explained your thinking clearly and carefully. Asking questions is a very good skill to have because it will help you understand others thinking and it helps others because they might be struggling to understand. Thanks for being brave with your questions!
